Fri, 26 Sep 2008 Welcome back, new Webelos Scouts! We're going to have a great year as we begin the trail to the Arrow of Light. There are twenty activity badges for Webelos to earn -- from Craftsman and Engineer to Aquanaut and Outdoorsman -- and each Scout can blaze his own trail. It's a great adventure and we're going to have a lot of fun! We've already had our first adventure as Webelos with a beautiful afternoon of kayaking on Spot Pond. As a transition between Cubs and Boy Scouts, the Webelos program gives the boys more reponsibility and helps them develop a sense of leadership. Before you know it, we'll be ready for even more adventures as Boy Scouts. Thanks to all our parents for their support! On April 2nd the Webelos and Bears that are finishing up their Parvulei Dei medals met with Fr. Coughlin from Most Blessed Sacrament Church. The boys told father about their project and what they had learned through the process. Fr. questioned them on several bible stories that they had talked about in their projects and they rose to the occasion and answered most of his questions. GREAT JOB. At the same time the boys made banners symbolizing the many gifts that God has given to them. The banners will hang on the pews of the church when they receive their medals on Sunday, April 30th at the 9:00 a.m. Mass at Most Blessed Sacrament. All scouts and their families are welcome to join us. Several of the Webelos & Bears also participated in the blessing of the blankets they made for Project Linus. This was another part of their community service project for their religious medal. Nicholas Sordello, Chris Powers, Noah Macdonald, Kevin Cajuda and Connor Shine represented Pack 722 at the blessing. SWIMMING! On Tuesday, April 18th, the Webelos met at the Burbank YMCA for a fun night of swimming and water safety. Parents, Mary & Gerard Dailey were the official instructors. The scouts participating were, Joe Dailey, Noah Macdonald and Chris Powers. To complete their Aquanot Achievement Badge, they will meet in June for a day of rowing instruction on Lake Quannapowit. Coming soon: Spring Webelos Woods – May 6th & 7th. This will be held at Camp Massasoit in Plymouth. The Boys will be working on several phases of their Outdoorsman Badge at this overnight. They will pitch their own tents, make a campfire and cook their own meals over the campfire. This should be a lot of fun for them and their parents that accompany them. [/Pack/Webelos1] permanent link Thu, 16 Mar 2006The Webelos Den has had a jam packed winter of 2006! They have completed their “Fitness” Activity Badge. While working on this badge, the boys discussed the bad effects of smoking, alcohol and drugs. We talked about peer influence and pressure and how the scout needs to make good choices when faced with these issues. The boys also kept a food chart of what they eat. When compared to the new food pyramid, we ALL needed to be eating more fruits and veggies! The Webelos enjoyed Cub Scout Olympics on Super Bowl Sunday. The Webelos represented our Den in the opening Flag Ceremony. They participated in everything they could find the time to. Everyone loved OUR Pack entry of the “Tricycle Race” but they all ad a different favorite. Roping a “calf”, firehouse pull, basketball throw, sit ups and many more! We’ll be back in 2007 for more fun. All of the Webelos scouts are working on their Religious medal. The Webelos scouts together with several Bear Scouts had to do a service project as part of their religious medal. They chose “Project Linus”, which collects blankets, quilts and afghans to give to children that have been traumatized or seriously ill both locally and nationwide. The boys collected money at a Sunday Mass from members of the parish and it was used to purchase polar fleece fabric. The scouts and the students and many members of the guild also donated fabric too. They became “blanketeers” working with the members of their parish Ladies’ Guild and the CCD school students in the 6th and 10th grades to make “no sew” throws. Thank you to the Scout Moms - Kelly, Lisa, Janis, Mary D., Bette Anne, Brenda and Anne that helped the evening of the project and also took some blankets home to finish. Over 100 blankets will be donated to “Project Linus” as a result of this collaborative effort. For more information on “Project Linus” go to www.projectlinus.com Congratulations to all the Webelos on their Pinewood Derby Car entries. Great Job! Good luck to Kevin Cajuda who took 1st Place in the Webelos race and will have the opportunity to represent us at the District Finals on March 18th.
[/Pack/Webelos1] permanent link Sat, 21 Jan 2006The Webelos have completed their first Activity Badge on their road to getting their WEBELOS Badge. This Achievement has 11 requirements including a community service project. The boys chose to collect food for the Interfaith Food Pantry. Together they made a flyer that was distributed to their fellow Cub Scouts through the den leaders. They sent it by e-mail to the leaders. At the December Pack meeting they collected the food and the next evening delivered it to the Interfaith Food Pantry on Lafayette Street. The lady at the food pantry was very happy to receive the donations right before Christmas and thought this was a Great Project for the boys to undertake. Great Job – you even made the Wakefield Item! During the school holiday vacation some of the boys went bowling and earned their bowling sports pin. It was a fun night and they learned about the etiquette of bowling. Who knew bowling had etiquette! The boys are now working on their Fitness Activity Badge. This is also a requirement for their Webelos Badge. When we first looked at this badge, we thought it would be more about exercise and physical fitness – NOT! It is about keeping your body healthy through good nutrition AND physical fitness. Meeting #1 was about the bad effects of smoking or chewing tobacco would have on your body. At meeting # 2 we discussed nutritional labels and packaging on foods and how to understand what the labels are telling you about the food. They boys are now keeping a record of their daily meals and snacks for a week. The boys are really into Webelos Scouting and are well on their way to earning their Webelos Badge! [/Pack/Webelos1] permanent link Sun, 15 Jan 2006By James L. Macdonald The excitement to get there was contagious. Last year the sleep over was canceled twice because of inclement weather. This year it was a sunny and warm day as we drove our caravans down to Camp Sayre located in Milton, MA. After instruction in gun safety, the Scouts were able to shoot B.B. guns at fixed targets while under strict supervision. The Scouts then had a soccer game against other scouts and then did some fancy footwork beneath the basketball hoop. The activities continued over the weekend with knot tying, safety awareness and wilderness survival. At the fire-starting class even the experienced and trained guardians, myself included, learned new and interesting ways to start fires that captivated all. Archery continued the competition as each Scout tried to improve on their previous score. Pumpkins were set upon the standard archery target and several of our Scouts skewered the pumpkins impressing all with their skills which were compared to splitting an apple or lighting a candle. The day flew by and the boys said they will remember the skits they performed by the blazing, bonfire that night. Their laughter reaching to the tree tops until the fire turned to coals and eventually burnt out. At home the laughter was rekindled as the Scouts told their family members or friends about the activities they participated in. They giggled and laughed about the times that for them won't ever burn out, but will remain a bright flame always inside them. [/Pack/Webelos1] permanent link The Webelos Den has been extremely busy this fall, working on their Badge Requirements. They are currently working on two activity badges, Citizen and Outdoorsmen. Both of these badges are part of the requirements for their Arrow of Light and the Citizen badge is the first of several citizenship requirements on the trail to Eagle Scout. The work involved for the Citizen badge relates directly to developing responsible citizens. The boys did projects about the meaning of the words in the Pledge of Allegiance, how to properly fold an American flag, and the special days we fly a flag. They wrote a story about a "Great American" and one of the Webelos scouts shared a copy of the original national anthem and the history of how it was written. They have one more project to do to complete this badge. All five Webelos Scouts just attended the Webelos Woods camping overnight. They earned their knot tying achievement, and how to start a fire. They also learned how to make 3 different kinds of campfires and the different kinds of wood needed for a campfire: tinder, kindling and fuel. Even, this parent learned a thing or two!!! Webelos Woods was not all work, it was great fun too! At the evening campfire, each den performed a skit or sang a song. Our den decided to sing a campfire song. The boys first taught each other the song, because they all didn't know it. Then they choreographed it. It was fun to see everyone at the campfire join in for the last verse! Great job guys!
