Dutton Center/Pack Meeting/Volunteers Needed

Good Afternoon Scout Families

Monday November 11th at 10:30pm we will be going to the Dutton Center on 5 Cooper St, Wakefield to perform skits and songs.  If you are around, please show up in your Class A uniforms.

On Friday November 15th at 6:30pm we will be holding our November Pack meeting.  It is switched to Friday because our popcorn order is delivered in the morning directly to the church.  If you will not be attending the pack meeting, please make arrangements with your Den leader to pick up your popcorn orders.  All money is due to your leaders by November 30th.

We will be making cards for Veterans at our meeting.  If anyone has extra construction paper laying around, we could use some donations.  Please do not feel the need to go purchase any.  You can drop this off during the day on Friday if it is convenient for you.

Don't forget we are also looking for the following items for Friday's meeting in order to make the holiday crackers for the food pantry.
  • toilet paper tubes
  • small candies (bite size) that fit inside the tubes, a great way to get rid of some Halloween candy
If you have any of these items laying around your house, we would greatly appreciate the donations.  Please do not feel you need to purchase any of these items.  Feel free to bring these either to your den leaders in advance, or directly to the meeting on the 15th.  For the most part, someone will be in the church from 4:30 until the meeting that day if you wish to drop it off early.

We are in need of a few volunteers for Friday's meeting for two jobs.

  • We need a few adults to help prepare the holiday crackers during the meeting (taking the tubes and start the wrapping process).  In addition, a few adult who can help man the table while the youth are filling them with candy would be great.
  • We need someone who could drop the holiday tubes off at the Wakefield Interfaith food pantry sometime during the following week.

  • If you can help with either of these, we would be truly grateful.  Please respond back if you can help, it will let us know if we are covered or not.

    Popcorn updates

Ok Pack 722, we are 2 days away from finishing up popcorn sales! Popcorn Order Forms ARE DUE TO YOUR DEN LEADERS ON OCTOBER 25!

If you haven't gotten out into your neighborhood yet, now is the time to do it! We are trying to get every scout to sell at least $350 worth of popcorn. That includes the show and sell amount. Remember that more sales equal more excellent prizes!

Each Show & Sell slot was worth $60 this year. That means if you worked for one slot, you get $60 toward prizes. If you worked two slots, you get $120 toward prizes. If you add this amount to the amount you have sold on your Popcorn Sales Order Form, you will get the total amount that you have for prizes. If you look at the prize sheet, you will see the prize amount tiers. The amount that you have earned will be equal to a prize tier amount from which to select a prize.

Remember, if you sold a lot of popcorn, you can select prizes from multiple prize tiers as long as the sum of the prize amounts on the prize form equal the total amount that you have earned in sales.

That is all. Go sell some popcorn.

    Pack Meeting this Thursday

Thank you to all who were able to make it to Camp Nihan this weekend.  It was a great time.

    PACK MEETING
Our next pack meeting is Thursday October 17th.  Please note we will be starting on time, so consider arriving a few minutes early so that you don't miss anything.  Unless it is stated in an email, all scouts should attend all Pack Meetings in their Class A uniform.

    REGISTRATIONS
We are asking everyone to please pay their registration fees by the next pack meeting.  Fees are currently $95 per scout and $85 for each additional scout in your family.  You have multiple options to choose from.
         1. Hand either check or cash to your Den Leader.
         2. Hand either check or cash to Jessica at the meeting.
         3. Venmo to the pack account.  Please make sure to mark the payment is for registration fees.  The handle for Venmo is:

    SERVICE PROJECT
The Troop helps us when we ask, so we are asking the Pack to help the Troop.  Their annual fundraiser is wreath sales.  They need to collect pine cones in order to decorate the wreaths.  There will be a box at the Pack meeting on Thursday.  A description of what they are looking for: " Eastern White pine cones to be exact. This year looks to be a bumper year for pine cones unlike last year. I will include a photo so everyone knows what we are looking for. Good places to look for pine cones are during the upcoming camping trips, local parks, cemeteries, Pine banks park, Breakheart, the Middlesex Fells, Walden Pond, your neighbors yards, etc."

    Popcorn Updates

    Take Order Sales:

    • This is a reminder for you to begin selling popcorn door to door and to family and friends, if you haven't already done so, using your Take Order forms.

There are four things that I want to mention in regard to selling online:

    • There is no pressure to sell online, it is your choice. Over the weekend, I had the chance to fully explore the online sales site and realized that the prices online are far higher than in previous years.

    • Secondly, if you do want to sell to family and friends online, the best method might be to tell them that it is a donation to scouting that comes with a bag of popcorn.

    • Thirdly, if you do want to sell online but don't want to sell to family and friends, consider sending out the link to your scout's page via email to addresses of local businesses.

    • Lastly, I heard a great tip for selling popcorn online: record a video of your scout asking for folks to buy popcorn to support the scouts. Then, upload it to the online site or attach it to an email with the link to their page.

    Order Forms:

    • Popcorn order forms and filled out Prize sheets are due to your den leaders by the 25th of October.

    • Money collected from your order form customers will be due on November 30th

    Camp Nihan Parking/Service Project

First of all, we have been informed that there should be enough parking at Camp Nihan, but people should know not to block the road.  Please make sure to let your Den leaders knows if you will be attending.

Secondly, a small service project between this weekend and our Pack meeting.  The Troop helps us when we ask, so we are asking the Pack to help the Troop.  Their annual fundraiser is wreath sales.  They need to collect pine cones in order to decorate the wreaths.  There will be a box at both the camp on Saturday as well as the Pack meeting on Thursday.

    Weekend Camping/Bruins Tickets/Pack Meeting

    Good Morning Pack!

I apologize for the delay in this email.  We were waiting to see what was the best course of action with regards to this weekend's event.  We also have a few additional announcements.  Please take the time to read through this email.

    CAMPING TRIP
Due to the still heightened EEE threat, we have made the hard decision to not go camping at Sudden Pond this weekend.  Instead!!!!!! We will be having a campout at Camp Nihan in Saugus on Saturday.  This is now a DAY event only from 11-3.  Dens will be having separate activities from 11-1:30 and we will finish the day with a campfire program from 1:30-3.

Camp Nihan is located at 131 Walnut Street, in Saugus (just before the Kohls plaza entrance).  We may have to be creative with parking but look for a separate email about that.

Unfortunately, since there will not be much down time, we are not having any whittling station for this event.  Den's might have whittling projects, but that is up to each Den Leader.

This is a Class B event, no uniforms are required.

Some Den may be cooking lunch as part of their activity.  Leaders will be sending out information soon if that will be the case.  If you Den is not, please bring a lunch with you.

Make sure to bring enough water for everyone in your family.

If you cannot make it this weekend, please make sure to let your Den Leader know.

    CLASS B SHIRTS
At the campout this weekend, we will be handing out Class B T-Shirts to those who do not already have one.  Lions through Bears should have a Blue pack shirt.  Please make sure to size the shirt so that they can wear it all 4 years.  Webelos and AOL scouts should have a Yellow pack Shirt.  Make sure to find your Den leader at the event and they will make sure to get you a shirt.

    BRUINS TICKETS
If you have already ordered Bruins tickets, our Cubmaster, Mr. Pothier, will have them at this weekend's campout.  If you will not be able to attend this weekend, please let us know so that we can determine a way to get you the tickets before Monday's game.  We are asking scouts to wear their class B uniforms.

         2. Hand either check or cash to Jessica or Rose at the "Campout".
         3. Venmo to the pack account.  Please make sure to mark the payment is for registration fees.  The handle for Venmo is:

    Online Sales

    Pack 722:

We've done an awesome job at the Show & Sells so far. Thank you to everyone who has participated, or will, in a Show & Sell. I would very much like to keep the momentum going with selling popcorn online.

Online sales are a great way to reach family, friends and enemies who do not live in the area or are not close enough to deliver popcorn ordered through a take order form. The popcorn is delivered directly to the person who orders and you get prize money. Boo yeah!

The top online sales scout will receive a gift card worth $50!!!

Last 2 Summer Pack Events Sunday the 18th and Saturday the 24th

    Hello Pack 722,

First Event - Blue Hills Hike

This Sunday August 18th is the Blue HillsTrail Hike......the trail is a 8 mile hike (all off road) with elevation changes in the terrain.   There are no bathrooms, so digging cat holes would be our only course of action and there are no places to replenish water bottles (carrying potable water for entire hike).  Class A uniforms are mandatory because this is a historical hike.

Its been said before but I'll say it again,  this hike isn't intended for the younger Scouts.   They have their hiking opportunities during our Town Forest cleanup hikes and will have an opportunity to complete longer hikes when they are older.

We will be stopping approximately half way through the hike to eat.

Due to the length of the hike (5-6 hours), we will meet promptly at 8am.   The meeting spot is the Blue Hills Trailside Museum 1904 Canton Ave Milton, MA.  We will send word to those attending if we switch the meeting spot.

If you plan on attending, please reach out to Mark Pothier via text with your name as well as email address to 781-454-8214.  He will be organizing the event and will need to be able to contact you in case of severe weather.

Second Event - Moulton Park Clean Up

On Saturday, August 24th we will be having a Town Park clean up service project.  This is perfect for any aged scout.  We start at 9am and will meet at Moulton Park off Cedar Street.  Please remember to wear appropriate Footwear and Dress According to the weather.  In addition, don't forget your Water, Snacks, Bug spray, Sun Screen, Gloves, Trash Bags.  There is no requirement to wear your uniform.

Looking forward to finishing this summer out strong.

This Saturday August 3 is the Marblehead Hike......the trail is a 6 mile hike along pavement through historical Marblehead and finishes in Salem.   We are not sure what the bathroom options will be during this hike (anticipate none for at least the first 3 miles) and there are no places to replenish water bottles (carrying potable water for entire hike).  Also, the weather for Saturday  morning is sunny and 86 degrees.....hot.  Class A uniforms are mandatory because this is a historical hike.

Its been said before but I'll say it again,  this hike is not designed for younger Scouts.   They have other hiking opportunities during our Town Forest cleanup hikes and will have an opportunity to complete longer hikes when they are older.

Due to the length of the hike (4.5-6 hours), we will meet promptly at 8:15 am.   The meeting spot is in the long term parking lot at New Liberty St. and Essex St in Salem.  It is across from Peabody Essex Museum and East India Square Mall.  Once all have arrived, we will carpool to the start in Marblehead.

If you plan on attending, please reach out to Mark Pothier via text with your name as well as email address to 781-454-8214.  He will be organizing the event.

    Hello Pack 722,

This Saturday July 13 is the Skyline Trail Hike......the trail is a 7 mile hike in the Fellsway woods (all off road) with elevation changes in the terrain.   There are no bathrooms, so digging cat holes would be our only course of action (been there, done that on this hike......just ask my oldest) and there are no places to replenish water bottles (carrying potable water for entire hike).  Also, the weather for Saturday is sunny and 89 degrees.....hot.

Due to the length of the hike (4.5-6 hours), we will meet promptly at 8am.   The meeting spot is a dirt pull off, on South Border Road (right side heading to Winchester), across from Governors Ave in Medford (this is very near Lawrence Memorial Hospital).    If for some reason there is a larger than expected turnout, we would meet at the Sheepfold parking area which opens at 9am and is located off the Fellsway west (Route 28 adjacent to Route I-93).  This is where the dog park is located.  We will send word to those attending if we switch the meeting spot.

Please respond to this email if you will be joining us with a contact number so that we know who we can be expecting.

Once we have reached the end of the route, please plan to meet us at the Galvin.  DO NOT wait until the end of the parade.

Please respond to this message if you will be joining us with your child's name, and a name of an adult and phone number of who we can reach during the parade should we need to reach you.  Parents are always welcome to walk in the back of our group if you wish to join your child.

There is some important information directly from the parade committee.

    How to Get Here

If you are being dropped off at the staging area by car:
Use 607 North Avenue Wakefield, MA 01880 for GPS directions. As you approach the staging area you will see signs and receive instructions for drop-off at the Lakeside Office Park.  All non-float groups MUST be in the staging area by 4:00pm for line up and the streets along the parade route and I-95/128 exit 39 will be blocked off starting at 4:00pm. Groups arriving after 4:00pm will not be allowed to participate.

If you are driving your own vehicle and need parking:
Groups arriving in multiple vehicles are asked to take the shuttle buses from the main parking lots at the end of the route at the Galvin Middle School or MG Fitness. Two shuttle busses will depart from the front doors of the school and gym making loops between the end and beginning of the parade starting at 12:30pm and the last shuttle will leave for the staging area at 3:45pm. If you plan to use the shuttle, please arrive early and meet the bus at the front of the school and the gym. There will be porta potties at/near the lots and also at the main staging area.

    Staging Area Information

    • Upon arrival at the staging area, a volunteer will assist you in finding your designated location. We shortened the distance between check in and the staging spots this year and participants are expected to walk to their staging location. A golf cart will be available on a case-by-case basis.
    • If you are taking the shuttle from the end to the staging area please arrive in the parking area BEFORE 3:30pm in order to be in the staging area for 4:00pm. The last shuttles will leave the parking areas at 3:45pm. Once the roads start to close it will be very difficult to get to the staging area or the end of route parking area.
    • Bathroom facilities will be available in the staging and parking areas
    • No alcohol is to be consumed in the staging area or during the parade. The police will be contacted and violators will be ejected from the parade and not be invited back for future events. There are no exceptions to this rule.

    Parade Information

    • The parade is 1.9 miles long and ends at the Galvin Middle School. The route is mostly flat and takes approximately 1 hour to the finish line once you are on the street.
    • The parade is held rain or shine. In the event of severe weather you will be contacted.
    • The parade starts at 5:00pm and is expected to conclude by 7:00pm. The Line of March is made the week of the parade. Please do not request to be placed at a certain point in the Line of March.
    • There is absolutely no stopping along the parade route and please stay with your group. We must complete the entire parade within 2 hours with minimal gaps. This rule applies to all groups.
    • Throwing candy or water balloons, using squirt guns, or passing out literature of any kind is strictly prohibited. You can interact with the crowd but cannot hand anything out. Violators will be ejected from the parade and not be invited back for future events. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

Looking forward to an awesome summer!

Summer Activities Scehdule - 1st Event Thursday.

Attached you will find a flyer briefly detailing out our summer activities.  More information will be coming out over the summer regarding these events, but wanted to get the schedule out to everyone.

Here is some details for our June events.

This Thursday, June 6th, is our Spring Registration.  You are not required to re-register you children at this time.  For those of you who were new to the Pack last year, there is no new registration process after the first year, simply pay annual dues in September.  This is our opportunity to invite more youth from Wakefield to join our Pack.  If you child has a friend who might be interested, this would be a great opportunity.  It is a drop in event.  We will be having hot dogs and slush at the field as well.  It would be great to see you there.  There is no need to be in Class A uniforms - Class B or other scout T-Shirts are appropriate.

We realize that not everyone has received a Class B Pack T-Shirt.  The order has been placed and as soon as they are in, we will be reaching out.  We apologize for the delay in getting these out to all the youth.

On Sunday, June 9th we will be having our 1st Town Forest clean up service project.  These events include taking a small hike into the town forest.  This is perfect for any aged scout.  We start at 9am and will first meet at the dog park.  There is an Eagle Project for a Scout in Troop 701 happening that weekend at the dog park and we would like to be able to recognize this former Pack member's hard work.  Please remember to wear appropriate Footwear and Dress According to the weather.  In addition, don't forget your Water, Snacks, Bug spray, Sun Screen, Gloves, Trash Bags.

The last event for the Pack in June is our Spring Camp Out at New England Base Camp in Milton, MA.  For those of you who have registered, I will be sending more information out soon.  If you wish for more information, there is a portion that can still be attended if you did not pre-register, please reach out to me so that I can explain.

Looking forward to an amazing summer!

BSA Girls Troop - For girls 11 years old and older

BSA Troop 701 is hosting an informational night about girls joining the troop On Tuesday April 30th at 7pm. If you are interested, please come and ask questions. There will be a chance for new sign ups for both Cub Scouts and the Troop in June.

TROOP 701 TO WELCOME GIRLS TO SCOUTS BSA PROGRAM Informational Meeting to be held on April 30 Wakefield Troop 701 is pleased to announce that it plans to welcome girls who want to join the Scouts BSA program. The troop will be open to all girls ages 11 to 17.

An informational meeting will be held for all girls and their parents or guardians on Tuesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. at the First Parish Congregational Church. All youth and adults interested in learning more about the Scouts BSA program are invited to attend.

As of February 1, 2019, the Boy Scouts of America launched a program to allow girls to join troops and engage in the same scouting program as boys. This will enable girls to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout. Girls will enjoy the same curriculum and the same program as boys. The girls will be in a girl-led troop with its own Scoutmaster, but will otherwise share the same resources as the boy-led troop. The new program is called Scouts BSA, and will enable girls to enjoy the same activities that boy scouts have engaged in for more than 108 years, to deliver character development and values-based leadership training. The mission of Scouts BSA is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. The girls will run the same Scouting program, earn the same merit badges, and achieve the same ranks, up to and including the highest rank of Eagle Scout.

Troop 701 is chartered to the First Parish Congregational Church, the stone church by the Lake, at One Church Street in Wakefield. For further information about the troop please visit www.troop701wakefield.org. Questions can be emailed to troop701wakefield@gmail.com.
