Prizes for Popcorn Sales Follow-up

Update on prizes:

Once all of the scouts have created their online accounts and I am able to add their take-order sales to their account, I can release the prize rewards points. I will need to complete all sales for every scout before I do that. When I release the rewards, I will send out an email letting you know that your scout can login and select their prize.

All of this only applies if your scout had any sales this year.

Ornaments and Popcorn Updates

Just a reminder that all ornament order forms are due to your den leaders by 5pm tomorrow.  Please let them know if you have not sold any so that we do not miss any orders.

We would like to apologize for the silence regarding the popcorn orders as we have been waiting on Council to get back to us.  We found out today that the majority of our order is in, although there are a few items on backorder.  Neal will be reaching out to those who did take orders either Tuesday or Wednesday to let you know when you can pick them up.  We appreciate everyone's patience this year.

Popcorn Sheets

Hello Pack 722!

Just checking in on you and your popcorn selling. Popcorn take-order sheets are due to your den leaders next Sunday, October 25th.

Remember that we are only encouraging you to reach out to family and friends and not go door-to-door selling this year. The popcorn fundraiser is our largest fundraiser of the year. We use these funds to fuel our overnight camp-outs and other programs that we run in Pack 722.

Thanks,

Dues due Thursday 10/15 and Fishing on Saturday 10/17

Just wanted to send out a few reminders for this week.

The dues for the 2020-2021 year will be $155.00  This can be by check, cash or venmo (@pack722wakefield).  If you use Venmo, please make sure to write your Scout's name and Den Number in the description.  As in previous years, there is a discounted rate if you have additional children in the program, that rate will be $145.00.  This is up from previous years, due to the increases at the national level and because we have decided not to do show and sell popcorn sales.  The $155 is broken down into $87 for National fees, $30 for local council for the adventure card and $38 toward the Pack.  We are asking for all dues to be paid to your den leaders by October 15th.  If for some reason you are unable to pay, we do have scholarships available, please talk to your den lead or our committee chair (Jessica Belyea).
Just as a reminder, the adventure card gives free or discounted rates towards various scout and non-scout related activities - here is a link to the council page for reference: https://www.newenglandbasecamp.org/adventure-card/ .

Come fish with us at Lake Q.  Kids under the age of 15 do not need a fishing license.  Saturday October 17th 7:30am-9am. Please dress for the weather, however if the scouts could wear their Class B uniforms or their scout hats that would be great.  Make sure to wear your masks.  Make sure to bring your own drinking water.

Bring your fishing gear - if you have any extra, we may have some scouts who are in need to borrow it.  Please let us know.  Also, Walmart does have some cheaper poles for approx $10.  Wakefield also has a local store, Boats and Motors, on North Ave near the dinner.  A stick with string works as well!!!.  The Pack will be providing corn and worms for bait - however, feel free to bring what bait you like to fish with.

We will be spreading out around the lake.  Please see the picture below as to where each group will be.  Pack Leadership will be around to help you.

Pack Outdoor & Fishing Weekend - Saturday October 17th

Typically every year at this time we are preparing for our annual Columbus weekend camping trip.  With the way life is at the moment - we did not feel that is possible.

So instead, we are recommending everyone use the weekend of October 16-18 as a Family Outdoor weekend.  Sleep in a tent in your yard (or maybe under a pillow fort in your living room).  Go for a Hike or a Bike Ride.

OR......

Come fish with us at Lake Q.  Kids under the age of 15 do not need a fishing license.

Saturday October 17th 7:30am-9am

Please dress for the weather, however if the scouts could wear their Class B uniforms or their scout hats that would be great.

Make sure to wear your masks.

Our First Pack meeting is only for parents.  It will be held this Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.  We will be using Google Meet - you can either find the link here https://meet.google.com/xcj-yutu-pxk  or on our Pack 722 Calendar.  We will be covering:
  • How we plan to operate in the midst of this unusual year
  • Dues
  • Volunteer positions
  • And, most importantly, POPCORN!

If your child has a friend who is interested, please spread the word.  In addition, the month of October will be "Bring a Friend" whether it is over zoom or in person to a den meeting.  Our only request is that you run it by your den leader first to make sure we are maintaining appropriate health precautions.

Good Afternoon Pack!

Below you will find a quick survey to get some feedback regarding what everyone is comfortable with regarding meetings this year.  Please give your honest feedback - one per family.  We are all in different places, so some may feel fine doing outdoor activities while others may feel like zoom meetings would be a better option.  We'll do our best to accommodate as much as we can.  Please feel free to email with any specific questions.

Looking forward to a great year in Cub Scouts with you all!

Advancements/Yard Signs/Summer Activities/Aug 15th Hike Change/USS Consitution

We hope everyone's summers are going well!  We wanted to give some updates regarding the Pack.

Advancements

They have finally arrived! We are working on getting them to you den leaders and they will be reaching out soon.

Yard Signs

We are in the process of obtaining yard signs to show everyone we are proud of our scouts and help promote the pack.  When your den leader arrives with your Scout's advancements, they will be asking if you are ok with the sign in your yard. We are getting enough for one per family.

Summer Activities

Hopefully, your families are enjoying the outdoors.  Just a reminder about our Summer Activities and the possible Outdoor activity awards, we have a lot of opportunities to get out and be active in our communities while being socially distant.  Don't forget to take photos of your activities and share them with your Den Leaders and our Cubmaster - Mark.  We want to make sure everyone gets credit for the awesome adventures they take this summer.

August 15th Hike Change

We will no longer be doing the Pilgrim Trail on August 15th.  Instead we will be doing the Freedom Trail.  More information to come but we will start at 9am.

USS Constitution

Some of you may have seen on our Summer activity list that there was a potential of a sleepover on the USS Constitution early in July.  Some of you may have even seen some pictures.  Due to COVID, we were restricted to a total of 25 people.  So we decided it was best to offer this trip to our oldest scouts first and then in a future year try to have the same trip for those scouts who were not able to go the first time.  We hope to host this event again very soon.

BSA recalls Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Pins

BSA recalls Cub Scout Outdoor Activity pins sold between April 2016 and January 2020

July 1, 2020

The Boy Scouts of America today announced a voluntary recall of Cub Scout Outdoor Activity pins that depict a gold animal paw painted on a blue background sold between April 2016 and January 2020.

The pins were sold at local Scout Shops, authorized BSA distributors and online at scoutshop.org. About 78,000 pins are affected although about 12% of the affected units are in inventory and have never been sold or distributed.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the affected pins, and the BSA has identified and fixed the problem that led to the recall. The recall was prompted when a regular quality assurance the BSA implements through a third-party testing lab indicated that parts of the pin's face and shaft contained levels of lead above limits set by the federal government.

Families with a recalled pin should stop using it immediately. They're entitled to an exchange or refund, even if they no longer have a receipt or the original tag.

How to tell whether you have a recalled pin

The recall applies to Cub Scout Outdoor Activity lapel pins. Other activity pins are not included in the recall.

If you threw away the receipt, that's OK. If you purchased the pin between April 2016 and January 2020, follow the instructions below or visit your local Scout Shop.

What to do if you have a recalled pin

Families with a recalled pin should stop using it immediately.

Even if you no longer have a receipt, you are eligible for an exchange or refund.

Return the product to any Scout Shop or directly to the BSA's National Distribution Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Instructions for returns can be found at this link.

Update for Hikes and a new one added for this weekend

We had a couple of people attend last Saturday's Hike.  I heard it was a great time.

Please note - if you plan on attending the hikes, we are changing the deadline to contact Mr. Pothier to Thursday night at 5 pm.  This will ensure that he has time to coordinate the car rides.

On these hikes - there will probably be no public bathrooms.

We have added another hike this Saturday June 20th called Leslie's Retreat. We will meet in Salem at the parking lot on Federal and Church St across from the Peabody Essex Museum at 7:45 am.  Plan to leave some cars there and drive others to the start in Marblehead.  It is approximately 5-6 miles long, with no public bathrooms and we anticipate it taking 4-5.5 hours to complete.  Again, if you wish to join us, please email Mr. Pothier at guggins@yahoo.com so that he will know whom to expect.  Make sure to be prepared for the weather and carry enough water.

Don't forget this weekend is our Spring "Camping" in our own backyards.

Outdoor Activity Award

In addition to the Summertime Pack Award, many of our scouts earn the Outdoor activity award.  This award starts with the completion of a resident or day camp provided by BSA.  The second is completing a required adventure from the Scout handbook (usually done through the Scout year).  The third step is completing an additional 4, 5, 6 or 7 outdoor activities (Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos, respectively).   We have attached the normal requirement sheet to this email for your convenience.  Make sure to mark off and take photos of your completion.  Email your den leaders with questions!

With the difficulty/uncertainty of completing summer camp this year, our Pack has prepared our own guidelines for requirements to fulfill the summer camp portion. The Scouts would have to complete all 5 Alternate Summer Camp Activities to satisfy the Summer Camp requirement.  They would then have to complete step 2 and 3 to achieve the award.   This option will be used if a Scout can't make it to a summer camp this year (there will be some camps around but the enrollment will be scaled back).

Alternative Summer Camp Activities (Must complete all 5 and please send pictures to your den leader for each item)

2. Make a fort
3. Practice working on 3 Knots (attachment as well as these videos https://www.animatedknots.com/scouting-knots )
4. Camp out 2 nights throughout the summer (in addition to Father's Day weekend)  Preferably in your backyard, but if you have restrictions, discuss it with your den leader to figure out what can work for you.
5. Earn one elective (listed below) involving the outdoors for your new rank (Remember you just crossed over)

Tigers
Floats and Boats
Good Knights
Rolling Tigers
Sky is the Limit
Tiger Tag

Wolf
Air of the Wolf
Digging in the Past
Finding Your Way
Germs Alive
Grow Something

Bear
A Bear Goes Fishing
Bear Picnic Basket
Forensics
Make it Move
Salmon Run

Webelos/AOL
Aquanaut
Cast Away
Earth Rocks
Into the Wild
Into the Woods

We hope you all have a great outdoor summer!

Rank Up/Recruiting/Summer Pack Activities

Good Evening Pack!

We hope you are all doing well and are ready for Summer.  Typically by this point we have had our rank up ceremony and about to host our recruiting Round Up on the common.  However, due to delays and cancellations, we have not been able to do either.

Rank Ups - we are waiting for the advancements to be mailed out.  Once we have them, den leaders will be reaching out to each family to determine the best way to present them to your Scout.  Once everyone has received their advancements, we will be putting together a slideshow in order to congratulate all Scouts for not only ranking up but a few special awards as well.  Be on the lookout for correspondence from your den leader and the Pack.

Recruiting - We are in the process of purchasing some lawn signs.  When your den leader delivers your Scouts advancements - if you would be willing to have one on your property, we would appreciate it.  Not being able to have an in person recruiting event is tough.  However, through word of mouth (TELL YOUR FRIENDS) and placing these signs, we hope for many new scouts in the fall!

Summer Activities - as usual we will be hosting a number of summer activities. REMEMBER: you must participate in one activity each month (June, July and August) to qualify for the Summertime Pack Award.  These events are on our Pack Calendar.  Make sure to watch the calendar for updates or changes.

The first June event technically has passed, however, feel free to do this on your own time.  There was plenty of trash just around the parking lot.

All park cleanups are in person events, if your family is not comfortable in a group setting, please feel free to do it on your own time. but will generally start them at 9am when Mr. Pothier is in attendance.   The Scouts should be encouraged to carry the 6 essentials in a backpack.  Items not to collect as trash by the Scouts would be but not limited to glass, clothes and needles.  A picture of the Scout at the park during the cleanup is needed and required to be sent to Mr. Pothier ( guggins@yahoo.com) and their den leader.

The younger scouts have the opportunity to enjoy short hikes in the Town Forest June and July and the longer Pirate Trek hike in August.

The 3 - 10 mile hikes are designed for older scouts, AOL and Webelos.   Because these are new hikes to us, we don't know much about them including food, water and bathroom stops.  Food and water will have to be carried for the hike.  The first 2, larger hikes, have to be planned out as far as travel because they are point to point hikes and not circular.   If you please to go, please email Mr. Pothier so that he can expect you.  This requires members to reach out to Mr. Pothier so we can coordinate the logistics of car rides or biking from the end back to the start.   We will have to adhere to face coverings and social distancing rules.....neckerchiefs are great for this practice.

All BSA historical hike hikers have the opportunity to earn a trail patch and medal.

June

7th      Sunday - Mapleway Town Forest Cleanup 9am start
13th    Saturday - Witch Trail 8am start, 10 mile Danvers to Salem 5-7.5 hrs. - Remember to email Mr. Pothier by 5pm the night before so that he can expect you.
20-21 Sat-Sun - Pack Backyard Campout - Make sure to take a photo and send it to Mr. Pothier and your Den leader.

July

4th.         Saturday - Sons of Liberty Trail 8am start, 10 mile Lex. To Concord 5-7.5 hrs  Remember to email Mr. Pothier by 5pm the night before so that he can expect you.
10-11th.  FRIDAY-Sat. - USS Constitution Sleepover 4-5pm arrival? - This is still unknown, we are waiting for a response from the Constitution if we can participate or not, we will email out once we know more.
11th       Saturday - Clean Grounds at a School of your choice
25th.       Saturday - JJ Round Park Town Forest cleanup 9am start

August

Pack 722 Response to COVID-19

As we are sure you are all aware, COVID-19 is causing many events to be cancelled and postponed.

Current CDC guidance as well as guidance from the State and Town of Wakefield includes canceling of all large group events.

With this in mind, due to the State of Emergency in the Commonwealth and out of an abundance of caution, Pack 722 is suspending all Pack meetings and programs effective Saturday, March 14. The Pack will advise when meetings and programming will resume.

Individual den's may be holding small meetings depending on the weather and schedules.  Please use your family's best judgement whether you should attend.

At this time, District Pinewood derby is also postponed and we will let you know the new date, as soon as it is available.

Hello Pack722,

Thank you everyone for participating in a fantastic day of pinewood derby racing! It was great to see all of the scouts treating each other with respect and good sportsmanship.

I have posted all of the results from the races on the website. Click on this link to visit the page.

*Note: During the separate races for family and leaders, due to a glitch in the software, we lost the standings for the family race. Hopefully you took note of the standings when you were present. If anyone has a picture of the family race results

Final Derby Information!

Its finally here, this weekend is our big Derby Race.

Weigh In
The Derby Weigh In will be Friday March 6 from 6:30-8pm (sorry no early check ins).  No cars will be allowed to be checked in on Saturday March 7th (derby day).  All cars will be kept overnight at the church.  If you personally cannot attend the weigh in, please give your car to someone who can check it in for you.  No Uniforms are required.

No car can weigh more that 5 ounces. The Pack uses one scale to record the Official weight. All cars are checked in using that one scale to keep things even.  We will have a few tools and graphite to make minor adjustments to your cars if necessary.

Derby Day
Our Annual Derby will be held at the Church on Saturday March 7th.  Races are held by rank.  Please make sure to arrive 15 minutes prior to your start time, we do not wait for everyone to arrive.  This is a Class A uniform event.  We will have a Concession Stand, however if the scouts can bring their water bottles, we are actively trying to be more conservation minded as a Pack.  Even if you cannot attend the day, your car can race!

·         AOL 9-9:45
·         Weblos 9:45-10:45
·         Bear 10:45-11:30
·         Wolf 11:30-12:30
·         Tiger 12:30-1:15
·         Lion 1:15-1:45
·         Family 1:45-?

See you all ready to race!

Battleship Cove Sleepover Event - Time Sensitive

On May 9th, we are planning a visit to Battleship Cove. Spending an overnight on board one of the mightiest defenders of freedom truly is an unforgettable experience.

Although Battleship Massachusetts was designed to carry 1,800 men, she typically carried nearly 2,300 on board throughout the war. Steaming more than 225,000 miles over four long years, Big Mamie rotated her crew frequently, hosting more than 6,000 different officers and crew by 1945.

You'll be sleeping exactly where these men slept: in authentic sailors' racks.  Built of tough cotton canvas stretched across a sturdy aluminum frame, these racks will give you a firsthand feel of what it was like to be a sailor in World War II.  Upon arriving to the museum, campers are led to their assigned bunkrooms where they may stow their sleeping bags and belongings.

If you're lucky, your average hotel might throw in a complimentary continental breakfast with your lodging fee, but at Battleship Cove we give you breakfast and dinner. All meals are served "chow style" in the original Officers' Wardroom on board USS Massachusetts.  Campers then partake in a number of activities such as the new "Kilroy IS Here" scavenger hunt,  story teller,  feature films, play the game Battleship aboard a battleship, have a set of your own dog tags made, and much more.

Due to the restrictions with registration, we need to cut off the sign ups on Saturday March 7th.  This is open to current enrolled scouts and their parent/guardians (sorry no siblings).  Total cost is $69 per person.  A deposit of $35 per person is due by Saturday March 7th.  We will not be able to hold your reservation if the deposit is not paid.

Please use the attached sign up to register. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/409094CA9AC2BA0F58-battleship

Payment can be made to either Rose or Jessica at the Derby Check In or at the Derby itself.  Cash or Check made out to Pack 722 will be accepted.

Thank you!

Arrow of LIght Ceremony and Crossover Saturday February 29th

This Saturday, February 29th, at 7pm our Arrow of Light scouts will be awarded their highest award in cub scouts.  In addition, they will be officially crossing over into the Boy Scout troop. The entire Pack in invited, but not required, to attend.  Please note, this is a formal ceremony and may not be suited for some of our younger scouts.

We ask that all Webelos 1 scouts attend to present the flags.

Since this is a formal ceremony, proper Class A uniforms are required including either scout pants or khakis.

We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our AOL scouts.
